OCS auditions are Thursday, October 20, at Huntsville High School. We will begin hearing students at 4:00.

A recital to be given by High School students auditioning for OCS is provided for in the bylaws and may be scheduled by the membership.

The Huntsville Choral Directors’ Association will select one outstanding male and one outstanding female student in middle and high school as the most outstanding choral students in the city. The award does not have to be given in each category each year, if student competencies do not meet judging standards. Awards are given to members of the same gender only in the event of a tie vote. Each middle school may nominate two students (different gender or same gender), and each high school may nominate four students, two male and two female. High school winners will be awarded the Clarence Gandy Scholarship, amount to be determined by H.C.D.A.

The requirements for the outstanding choral student from middle school are as follows:

  • The student must be an 8th grade student, enrolled in a Huntsville City School choral music class, and a member of the current All- City Choir.
  • The student must be planning to continue choral music in high school.
  • The student must sing one song of appropriate nature by memory.
  • The student must be in good standing with his/her school.
  • The student must be approved by his/her choral director.

The requirements for the outstanding choral student from high school are as follows:

  • The student must be a 12th grade student, enrolled in a Huntsville City School choral music class.
  • The student must be a member of the high school All-City Choir the previous year, as well as the current year.
  • The student must be planning to continue choral music in college.
  • The student must sing one song of appropriate nature by memory.
  • The student must be in good standing with his/her school.
  • The student must be approved by his/her choral director.

Directors are responsible for filling out the assigned O.C.S. Form and will be responsible for writing a letter of recommendation.

Middle school students are judged by high school directors, and high school students are judged by middle school directors.

High school OCS candidates may be required to participate in the Outstanding Choral Student Fall Recital, to be held on the Sunday before the first All-City rehearsal.
